Mary B and studentsThe information below is for students living in Louisiana. If you live outside Louisiana, visit Home School Legal Defense to find the appropriate home schooling laws for your state or country. It is your responsibility as a parent to register with the state each year as described below.

For elementary students living in Louisiana, you must register with the state each year. Here  is a sample letter you can use to create your letter. Name your school anything you want, but do not use the name eLearningK12. It could be Smith Academy, etc. In the sample letter, replace the bold text with your information. Keep a copy of the letter for yourself, and send one copy to the address on the sample. We suggest you send it certified mail, return receipt requested so that you have proof you mailed it and proof it was received. If you have questions about this letter, please see the state Department of Education website.

NOTE:  The Louisiana Legislature recently passed a law allowing home school families to deduct the cost of home school materials on their state income taxes.  To do so, you must register for the Home Study Program, which is explained below in the section for high school students.

If you are withdrawing from a Louisiana public school, or if your child attended a Louisiana public school the year before enrolling with us, you must provide a written notification of enrollment to the public school the child attended within 10 days of enrollment.  This notification must include the student's legal name, date of birth, gender and race.  Please include a request for the student's transcripts with the notification.  Here is a sample letter for your convenience.

High school students living in Louisiana need to register as home study students to preserve their eligibility for TOPS. See the High School Home Study Packet for more information for high school students. High school students must be enrolled in the home study program for their junior and senior years to qualify for TOPS. Please review the TOPS awards for ACT score requirements for the various awards. Please review the state Department of Education website for more information on this program.  Home School Legal Defense is a good source for up to date information also.
